Icelandic Coast Guard uses Trackwell FiMS to detect unidentified vessels in EEZ

The Icelandic Coast Guard has recently intensified its monitoring of submarine communication cables and has detected unidentified vessels operating in Icelandic waters. These vessels, suspected to be part of the so-called “shadow fleet” linked to Russia, have been observed transmitting false location data, potentially misleading law enforcement and monitoring authorities.

The monitoring of these activities has been made possible by the Trackwell Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), which Icelandic authorities have relied on since 1997. The Trackwell VMS software is a state-of-the-art solution used in Fisheries Monitoring Centres (FMCs) worldwide for fisheries management, detecting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and assisting in search and rescue operations.

This is yet another success story where Trackwell’s solutions have played a crucial role in the diligent monitoring of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). With its near real-time insights, Trackwell VMS helps authorities and organizations sustainably manage and control fisheries activities, ensuring compliance with regulations and enhancing maritime security.
