Trackwell FiMS at IFOMC 2025: Thank you for a great conference!

Trackwell FiMS was proud to participate in the 10th International Fisheries Observer & Monitoring Conference (IFOMC), held at Harpa in Reykjavík from May 19–23, 2025. As always, IFOMC brought together global experts and innovators to share knowledge, best practices, and new ideas for the future of fisheries monitoring—and we were honoured to contribute to that dialogue.

Trackwell presented two lectures and one poster during the conference, and the response from attendees exceeded our expectations. We’re grateful for the many engaging conversations, insightful questions, and valuable feedback we received throughout the week.

Lecture 1: Lessons from Iceland – E-Log for small-scale fishers

Our first presentation focused on the development of an electronic logbook (e-Log) app tailored for Iceland’s small-scale fishing community. We shared our experience designing a system that emphasized simplicity, user involvement, and accessibility—critical components when introducing digital tools into traditional fisheries. The session sparked meaningful discussion on how similar solutions could support artisanal and recreational fishers around the world.

Lecture 2: Future-proofing fisheries data systems

Our second lecture addressed the long-term challenge of evolving fisheries data systems without sacrificing stability or legacy compatibility. Drawing on nearly 30 years of Trackwell’s experience developing Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) and our transition to full Fisheries Management System (FiMS) platforms, we explored the tension between maintaining robust operations and embracing modernization. The feedback confirmed that these concerns are shared globally, and Trackwell is well positioned to support both adaptation and reliability.

Poster: Data fusion and AI in fisheries surveillance

Our poster presentation introduced Trackwell’s vision for the Data Analysis Engine (DAE), which uses AI/ML to integrate multiple data sources, such as VMS, AIS, logbooks, and oceanographic data, to provide deeper insights and enhance risk analysis. We discussed how this emerging capability could support more efficient at-sea inspections and observation programs. The interest shown in this concept further reinforces the industry’s appetite for smarter, data-driven surveillance.

Trackwell would like to thank its current and future partners who visited our sessions or reached out to meet with us during the event. Hosting IFOMC in Reykjavík offered a unique opportunity to connect with peers on our home turf, and we’re excited about the collaborations ahead.

If you didn’t get a chance to meet with us at the conference, we’d still love to connect. Feel free to reach out to schedule a follow-up discussion or a demo of our FiMS platform and its evolving capabilities.

Let’s continue working together to shape the future of fisheries monitoring.
