In the early hours of the morning, the Icelandic Coast Guard was alerted when a small fishing vessel southwest of Reykjanes suddenly disappeared from surveillance. The situation triggered an immediate high-priority callout, and the rescue vessel Hannes Þ. Hafstein was dispatched to investigate.
Thanks to continuous monitoring through Trackwell’s Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), the disappearance was quickly detected, enabling authorities to respond without delay.
The fishing boat was located shortly after the callout. An electrical failure on board had interrupted its systems, but with the help of the Coast Guard, the vessel was safely escorted back to harbour.
This incident demonstrates the vital importance of real-time vessel monitoring, not only for fisheries management, but also for protecting lives at sea. Trackwell is proud to see its technology in daily use, supporting the Coast Guard’s mission to keep Icelandic fishermen safe.
