From 8 to 10 September 2026, Trackwell FiMS took part in SAFET 2026 , the Seafood and Fisheries Emerging Technologies Conference, in Cebu, Philippines. We joined fisheries authorities, maritime surveillance professionals, and technology providers to discuss the future of fisheries monitoring and compliance.
Trackwell’s presentation: applying AI to fisheries data
During the conference, our founder, Kolbeinn Gunnarsson, presented Trackwell’s perspective on how artificial intelligence can be applied to fisheries-related data to support monitoring, compliance, and operational decision-making.
The presentation also highlighted key technologies that are increasingly shaping modern fisheries management, including Trackwell’s EU-compliant fisheries management system and our development of advanced decision-support tools.
The challenge is no longer collecting data
One message emerged consistently throughout the conference: fisheries authorities are not struggling to collect data. Vessel positions, electronic reports, inspection records, environmental information, and many other data sources are already available in greater quantities than ever before.
The difficulty comes afterwards. Monitoring officers need to know which vessels deserve attention today, and they need to know it while there is still time to act.
What practical innovation means for fisheries authorities
In our experience, the future of fisheries monitoring will be defined by who can best understand and act upon the data collected. Artificial intelligence and advanced analytics offer significant opportunities, but their value depends on delivering practical results within real operational environments.
For us, that means solutions that help operators:
- identify risks early
- understand vessel behaviour
- make informed decisions with confidence
Thank you, SAFET
Conferences such as SAFET provide an important forum for exchanging ideas and understanding the challenges facing fisheries authorities around the world. We were encouraged by the strong interest we received, and we would like to thank the SAFET organisers and everyone who took the time to engage with us during the event.
The discussions reinforced our belief that the next generation of fisheries management systems must connect data collection with operational decision-making.
If we did not get the chance to meet in Cebu, please get in touch. We would be glad to hear about your monitoring challenges and show you what we are working on.
